International Committee of the protection of freedom and civil society expresses its extreme concern that took place recently in Ukraine, the persecution of some opposition leaders of the General Prosecutor of Ukraine.
International Committee for the Protection of freedom and civil society in this regard notes that the use of law enforcement for political purposes is a violation of internationally recognized democratic standards.
The tasks of the Ukrainian Constitution to the General Prosecutor’s Office is to combat organized crime, and not to create artificial obstacles to legitimate political opposition, manifested, for example, removal of restriction of the leaders of the civil movement “People’s Self-Defense” directed to deprive citizens of Ukraine right guaranteed by the same Constitution, to peaceful demonstrations, rallies and processions.
International Committee for the Protection of freedom and civil society in this context also draws attention to the Ukrainian government and heads of state as guarantor of human rights, the fact that the main task of the Ukrainian government, under the Constitution of Ukraine, is to uphold the rights and freedoms of citizens.
From this perspective, it is difficult to understand the motivation of officials of the General Prosecutor’s Office, whose staff in recent days have taken a number of searches actually unmotivated in a residential area leaders of the opposition movement “People’s Self-Defense”, and do not have, besides, no practical results in terms of a procedural perspective.
International Committee for the Protection of freedom and civil society expressed the hope that the leadership of the General Prosecutor’s Office refuses to use the product for any illegal purpose of this key law enforcement system of Ukraine by the order structure of some high officials of the executive branch, the consciousness which is still in captivity remnants totalitarian mentality.
International Committee for the Protection of freedom and civil society will closely monitor further developments in respect of the Ukrainian authorities in their country of civil liberties and political rights of the opposition.
